The 2016 Bandera Foot & Ankle Meeting at the historic Mayan Ranch in Bandera, Texas had 65 doctors and guests in attendance! Thank you to everyone for their support of the 2016 special event. Dr. Javier LaFontaine, Meeting Chairman & TPMF Vice President, noted that "Everyone benefits from the great interaction. Even when Dr. Harkless yells out - 'why did you do that?', or Dr. Mendicino & Dr. Brancheau get into friendly debate - it is educational!". First time attendee, Dr. David Hosack said, "I thought the meeting was great and got so much more out of smaller group discussion." His father, Dr. Richard Hosack, had attended the original Bandera meetings 30 years ago. Dr. Bill Van Pelt and Dr. Mike Valenza also attended - and said they have attended the meeting for 40 years and was glad to see it grow to benefit the residency programs and the TPMF projects. The rustic format with country cooking and horses is unique to first timers and special to repeat attendees.

The event is unique, not just because of the venue, but also because it focuses on sharing information and networking. This year, the meeting went above and beyond to make more of an impact to "give back to the profession by raising funds for the Harkless Scholarship fund at the Western University, funds for 6 resident grants for attending the Bandera meeting, funds for case awards, funds and 15 boxes of supplies for the TPMF mission and dedicating profits from the meeting to the participating residency programs.

TPMF wants to especially thank all the meeting sponsors: BAKO, DJO/Dr. Comfort, Tetra/Formula 3, Wright Medical, Axogen, and Integra. BAKO also sponsored the grand prize case winner. ACFAS Divison 3. ACFAS Region 3 supported the case winners with gift certificates for the ACFAS National Conference in 2017. The meeting combines the ranch atmosphere with keynote presentations and resident case presentations. The meeting was honored to have the residency directors and attendings from five of the Texas programs represented. The keynote speakers this year were Dr. Larry Harkless, Dr. Stan Churchwell, Dr. Craig Thomajan and Dr. John Starinski. Topics included updates in wound care research, charting updates, extremity nerve treatment options and the "anatomy" of practice contracts. The audience critiques each resident case presentation and then votes based on the following criteria: overall presentation, organization of case, clinical relevance, surgical/non-surgical approach and evidence based summary. The residents "face the audience fire" bravely, but also many ideas are shared in this interaction. The 2016 Case winners are:
- 1st Place - Andrew Bernhard, Kingwood Program "Soft Tissue Mass Case Study"
- 2nd Place - Andy Bruyn, West Houston Program "Achy Brachy-Metarsal"
- 3rd Place - Jeremy Walters, West Houston Program "Peroneal Instability"
Congratulations to all the winners!
